Artist Statement

Within the last two years of the pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests, continued displacement of marginalized communities, the increased violence against the Black community, I have recognized how much weight we, Black women, inevitably carry in our bodies and mental health.

We have developed a survival method rooted in self-healing and the ability to create joy out of turmoil. My experiences have taught me that the soulfulness birthed from this survival method is what allows me and countless others to transform our experiences into radical acts of self-expression and self-love.

I am currently exploring how I can more deeply encapsulate my ideas and emotions into my art practice by focusing on the foundational elements of art and design. What are our individual, and collective, connections to specific colors and materials? How can we continue to find joy, inspiration, relief, passion, and hopefulness around us? How can the art I create embody these ideas and reflect the world we are building now? How can I encapsulate the essence of Black women without portraiture?
